This past weekend was one of the saddest weekends for me yet... We had to put on family dog down. His name was Abe and he was 13 1/2 years old... our family has had many lab before but none like him. He was by far the best dog we've had! He was the sweetest dog, so loyal to his best friend Jacob, and ALWAYS wanting a treat! We didn't have a lot of warning... he got sick about two weeks ago, he was having a hard time walking and we could tell he was in a lot of pain. So my brother Jacob took him to the vet and he said that it wasn't anything serious that it was just arthritis in his back hips. so he put him on some meds and by the next day Abe was acting much better! about a week later (last wed) the meds were out... and we could tell a huge difference in abe... he wasn't eating well and he wasn't walking well. Jacob took him back to the vet, he gave him a shot to help with the pain, and took some X-rays... to see what the problem was. At that point the doc said it could be one of two things... a) bone cancer, if it's that there is not much we could do and he would have to be put down shortly. or B) infection from the arthritis, if that it's very treatable and he was very healthy and would most likely live another five years... while we were wanting for the test results Abe was only getting worse and it was the most awful thing watching him in so much pain! We got the results back and it wasn't cancer... that was very great news we though we would have five years left with him... but that night (thurs night) he wasn't doing well at all... so friday morning Jacob and my dad took him to the emergency vet to hook him up to an IV to pump the infection out. well... i'm not sure what went down there, but it wasn't good. They called us at 6:30 sat morning telling us we would need to put him down. It was so hard telling him bye. I think my whole family has had several good cries since that morning... It is the weirdest thing coming into our house and not hearing his deep bark and him running up to greet us.. we will miss him terribly.
so this blog was for Abe. Just to let you faithful bloggers know what an amazing dog he was.
on of my best memories of Abe is when i was about 10 or 11... i had the cutest lil hamster named snowball. And one day snowball got out of his cage, i was devastated searching everywhere for poor lil snowball... i had probably been looking for over half the day untill finally Abe comes up to me with snowball in his mouth!! he dropped snowball RIGHT AT MY FEET!! he had realized that i was looking for him... he found him and brought him to me ALIVE!!! what a great dog!!

ahhh... even I miss him. Our home isn't the same...
:( That's so sad! Truly. I'll miss him too. Will never forget the day Jess and I saved him from the Navy seal who had him wrestled to the ground - goodness knows why. Poor Abe.
Glad you have happy memories of him. And I agree - the story about him and the hamster is really cute.

Dad
awwww! that's sad. i'm sorry for you....=(
I cannot image coming to visit without seeing Abe. I told his cousin "Lance" the sad news. I just can't image being with out our Lance and Midnight. I can't image not talking to Abe about his cousin Lance at home in NC.
As for that Navy Seal, I would just love to know what he did to Abe. Had to have been awful because Abe would never have hurt anyone without provocation.
Love ya'll Aunt Kim
